    ADLib: An Arduino Communication Framework for Ambient Displays

    As computers become more and more a part of our everyday lives, the need to change the way in which people interact with them is also evolving. Ambient displays provide an effective way to move computers away from our main focus and into the periphery. ADLib is a small communication framework that aims to simplify the construction of ambient displays built using the Arduino prototyping platform. The ADLib framework provides an easy-to-use library for communicating with an Arduino, allowing the user to focus on the construction and development of the display. The framework consists of three main components: A protocol for encoding information to be sent from a host computer to the Arduino An Arduino library for receiving and parsing incoming data A desktop application for sending data to the Arduin

    The Human Serum Metabolome

    Continuing improvements in analytical technology along with an increased interest in performing comprehensive, quantitative metabolic profiling, is leading to increased interest pressures within the metabolomics community to develop centralized metabolite reference resources for certain clinically important biofluids, such as cerebrospinal fluid, urine and blood. As part of an ongoing effort to systematically characterize the human metabolome through the Human Metabolome Project, we have undertaken the task of characterizing the human serum metabolome. In doing so, we have combined targeted and non-targeted NMR, GC-MS and LC-MS methods with computer-aided literature mining to identify and quantify a comprehensive, if not absolutely complete, set of metabolites commonly detected and quantified (with today's technology) in the human serum metabolome. Our use of multiple metabolomics platforms and technologies allowed us to substantially enhance the level of metabolome coverage while critically assessing the relative strengths and weaknesses of these platforms or technologies.     Lawson criterion for ignition exceeded in an inertial fusion experiment

    For more than half a century, researchers around the world have been engaged in attempts to achieve fusion ignition as a proof of principle of various fusion concepts. Following the Lawson criterion, an ignited plasma is one where the fusion heating power is high enough to overcome all the physical processes that cool the fusion plasma, creating a positive thermodynamic feedback loop with rapidly increasing temperature. In inertially confined fusion, ignition is a state where the fusion plasma can begin "burn propagation" into surrounding cold fuel, enabling the possibility of high energy gain. While "scientific breakeven" (i.e., unity target gain) has not yet been achieved (here target gain is 0.72, 1.37 MJ of fusion for 1.92 MJ of laser energy), this Letter reports the first controlled fusion experiment, using laser indirect drive, on the National Ignition Facility to produce capsule gain (here 5.8) and reach ignition by nine different formulations of the Lawson criterion

    Is gardening corals of opportunity the appropriate response to reverse Philippine reef decline?

    Hard coral cover (HCC) in the Philippines has been declining over the past decades. Restoration practices that utilize “gardening” corals of opportunity (COPs) are actively being adopted throughout the country. However, the use of COPs in coral gardening has not yet been examined in terms of its effectiveness in addressing nationwide-scale reef decline. The feasibility of using COPs for coral gardening was determined through a spreadsheet model that derives COP numbers needed to increase HCC in a reef. The model showed that 280,112 COPs of 5-cm radius need to be transplanted to increase HCC in a hectare of reef from 0% to 22%, the current national average. Annual COP mortality must be less than 31.5% to achieve an increase in HCC above 22% over a span of 10 years following a gardening effort. Actual counts and generic composition of available COPs were recorded from transects in 20 reef stations across three locations in the Philippines (Lian, Luzon; Lubang Island; and Balabac, Palawan). Natural COP densities suggest that large areas of healthy reefs must be searched to obtain enough COPs for an effective gardening effort. Furthermore, the COPs measured in Lian were below the recommended fragment size for transplantation, thus needing nursery rearing to attain the 5-cm radius prescribed for increased probability of transplant survivorship. These findings indicate that applying coral gardening at a nationwide scale is not likely to be feasible, effective, or sustainable. © 2018 Society for Ecological Restoratio

    High Aerobic Capacity Mitigates Changes in the Plasma Metabolomic Profile Associated with Aging

    Advancing age is associated with declines in maximal oxygen consumption. Declines in aerobic capacity not only contribute to the aging process but also are an independent risk factor for morbidity, cardiovascular disease, and all-cause mortality. Although statistically convincing, the relationships between aerobic capacity, aging, and disease risk remain largely unresolved. To this end, we employed sensitive, system-based metabolomics approach to determine whether enhanced aerobic capacity could mitigate some of the changes seen in the plasma metabolomic profile associated with aging. Metabolomic profiles of plasma samples obtained from young (13 month) and old (26 month) rats bred for low (LCR) or high (HCR) running capacity using proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (<sup>1</sup>H NMR) were examined. Results demonstrated strong profile separation in old and low aerobic capacity rats, whereas young and high aerobic capacity rat models were less predictive. Significantly differential metabolites between the groups include taurine, acetone, valine, and trimethylamine-<i>N</i>-oxide among other metabolites, specifically citrate, succinate, isovalerate, and proline, were differentially increased in older HCR animals compared with their younger counterparts. When interactions between age and aerobic capacity were examined, results demonstrated that enhanced aerobic capacity could mitigate some but not all age-associated alterations in the metabolomic profile
